From the Veneno to Centenario: this is the ultimate guide to Lamborghini’s Aventador-based limited edition hypercars.

The Lamborghini Aventador, unveiled in 2011 and retired in 2022, changed the world of supercars. The newly engineered platform’s impact was felt not only in the Aventador models (such as the Aventador SVJ) but also in the limited edition and one-off hypercars that leveraged it (such as the Veneno).

Limited editions are models where Lamborghini limits the number of units it is willing to make; usually, under one hundred cars come out of the factory. One-off cars are models with only one single car ever made of that model.

As the first Lamborghini with a carbon fiber monocoque, the Aventador set the stage for the creation of numerous limited-edition hypercars and bespoke one-off models. Carbon fiber does not require expensive tooling to mold new shapes, so Lamborghini could experiment with new designs and feasibly only make 1 – 50 of them.

These exclusive cars, designed for Lamborghini’s elite clientele, showcased the brand’s performance and design prowess. Buyers would be drawn not only to the performance and looks but also to the exclusivity. These cars have appreciated; these models sell for millions of dollars at auctions.

Here’ are the supercars based on the Aventador:

  • Lamborghini Veneno
  • Lamborghini Centenario
  • Lamborghini Sián
  • Lamborghini Essenza SCV12
  • Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4
  • Lamborghini Auténtica
  • Lamborghini Invencible

Discover the Veneno: Lamborghini’s $3 Million Masterpiece

Unveiled in 2013 to celebrate Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary, the Veneno is one of the most exclusive limited editions ever produced.

Named after one of a particularly aggressive corrida fighting bull, the Veneno roared with a 6.5-liter V12 engine with 740 horsepower. Its aerodynamic design allowed it to reach a top speed of 220 mph. Only four coupes and nine roadsters were made, each sold for around $3 million. One coupe was reserved for the Lamborghini Museum.

The Veneno is among the most exclusive, aggressive, and valuable Lamborghini hypercars.

The Veneno is a personal favorite of mine. Its design is unapologetically aggressive, and the performance backs it up. Like a rebound relationship, this car would probably ruin your life, but you’d love every minute of it.

The Centenario Was A Tribute to Ferruccio Lamborghini

The Centenario, introduced in 2016, honored the 100th birthday of Lamborghini’s founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini.

This low-volume model featured a 759 horsepower V12 engine, making it the most powerful ever Lamborghini at the time. With its low-slung carbon fiber body and advanced aerodynamics, the Centenario showed what Lamborghini could make when they were let loose.

Just 20 coupes and 20 roadsters were produced and sold for an undisclosed price.

The Historic Sián: The First Hybrid Lamborghini

First revealed in 2019, the Lamborghini Sián marked Lamborghini’s foray into hybrid technology. Combining the iconic V12 engine with a supercapacitor-based hybrid system, the Sián delivered a staggering 808 combined horsepower.

The futuristic Sián incorporated elements of design and technology from the Terzo Millennio concept, which was developed with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

With only 63 coupes and 19 roadsters produced, the Sián previewed Lamborghini’s future. Lamborghini’s top-of-the-line model is a hybrid hypercar, the Revuelto.

Personally, I would buy the Sián if money were no object. As a designer, I appreciate the details in the design. It also strikes a balance between aggressive styling and cleanliness, which is some sort of design sorcery in my mind. And it’s the first hybrid Lamborghini—the Sián is historic.

The Essenza Is A Track-Only Beast

The Essenza SCV12, introduced in July 2020, was made exclusively for the track and managed by Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse division.

Race car drivers had access to 820 horsepower from Lamborghini’s most powerful V12 engine. The Essenza SCV12 featured a carbon fiber chassis, advanced aerodynamics, and a stripped-down interior for optimal performance on the racetrack.

Only 40 units were built. Buyers did not take the car home; instead, it would be stored in a hangar with cameras so that owners could log into a website and view a live feed of their precious car.

Owners would be reunited with their Essenza if they raced with other owners in a special series, or they could have Lamborghini transport it to any FIA-certified racetrack around the world.

A Modern Take On The Classic Countach

In 2021, Lamborghini resurrected the iconic Countach with the new LPI 800-4.

Based on the Aventador, this limited-edition model combined the legendary design of the original Countach with modern engineering. Lamborghini owes its success and brand image to the original Countach and its innovative wedge-shaped design by Marcelo Gandini. The new one is a contemporary take on the classic line of the early year Countach.

The new Countach shares many features with the Sián FKP 37, including its powertrain. Its V12 engine and a mild-hybrid system produced 803 combined horsepower. Limited to 112 units, the new Countach seamlessly blends the past and present, capturing the essence of Lamborghini’s design heritage.

Auténtica: The Authentic Personalized Experience

The Auténtica and Invencible were the last pair of one-offs based on the Aventador and showcased Lamborghini’s ability to create bespoke models tailored to individual customer preferences.

The Auténtica was a spyder with a fixed open-top body. The owners must pray it doesn’t rain on their drives!

This unique car combined elements from previous limited editions. The Auténtica showed that the Lamborghini team could create drivable, high-quality one-off vehicles for decerning, ultra-high-end buyers. These are essentially concept cars without all the kinks and shortcuts that come with the prototyping process (I know how it works; I am an industrial designer by trade.)

Invencible, The End of an Era

Alongside the Auténtica, the Invencible was one of the two final special editions based on the Aventador. They were also the last cars to roll out of the Lamborghini factory with an internal combustion V12 engine alone. The Revuelto replaced the Aventador on the production line; thus, all vehicles will have a hybrid powertrain from then on.

The Invencible was a coupé that went to a buyer to whom money was no object.

This one-off model incorporated design cues from the Lamborghini models with the Centro Stile design language: the Aventador, Huracán, Centenario, Veneno, etc.

The Invencible symbolized the end of an era, paving the way for Lamborghini’s next generation of hybrid and electric supercars.

Conclusion

The Lamborghini Aventador’s carbon fiber construction revolutionized the brand’s approach to design, engineering, and production. For the first time, Lamborghini could feasibly make limited editions. This new process enabled Lamborghini designers to play and create numerous limited edition models and one-offs.

These supercars, from the Veneno to the Invencible, demonstrate that there is a market for exclusive hypercars, and Lamborghini can supply them to buyers with big wallets and high standards.

Each model, with their own unique style and story, captivates exotic car enthusiasts and Lamborghini buyers worldwide.

We know limited edition models based on the Revuelto platform are in the works, and each model will be exceptional. But these Aventador-based masterpieces will remain iconic symbols of automotive excellence.
