About the 400 GT

The 400GT was Lamborghini’s second car model. Lamborghini was not the supercar brand we know today; Ferrucio Lamborghini was focused on making the best grand touring car (GT car). As such, the 400 GT was designed as an upgrade to the earlier 350GT in power, gearing, comfort and storage.

Lamborghini’s new and proprietary V12 increased in displacement to make more power: 320 hp. Later, the 5-speed manual gearbox became easier to shift with gears sliding together with synchromesh.

The 350 GT was made with aluminum body panels, but this was too costly for Lamborghini to maintain. They switched to steel for the 400 GT adding 551 lbs (250 kg) and performance suffered.

The cabin of the 400 GT was luxurious and made it a pleasure to drive around the Italian countryside. Later, Lamborghini offered a 2+2 body so the kids could come on those weekend drives.

With its refined design and enhanced power, the 400GT solidified Lamborghini’s reputation for producing high-performance, stylish cars. Only 247 units (approximately) were made.

The 400 Gt was replaced in the lineup with the Lamborghini Islero, another GT car. But the Miura was coming, and it would change the direction of Lamborghini forever.
